Italy is experiencing severe heatwaves this summer, with red alerts issued for seven cities including Rome and Florence. Temperatures on the island of Sardinia are expected to soar as high as 45 degrees Celsius. The heatwave has already claimed at least seven lives in Italy. It was caused by hot air from North Africa stagnating over Europe, a phenomenon known as an 'Omega block'.
