CURATED LIVING exhibition was held at ASHTA District 8 from 3 to 26 July 2026, presenting a multidisciplinary programme that brought together sculpture, interior design and cultural references within shared public spaces. Presented under the theme Where Design Meets Lifestyle, the programme examined the relationship between artistic expression and functional space.

This approach reflected the realities of contemporary urban life, where the boundaries between work, leisure, culture and domestic space have become increasingly fluid. Instead of separating art from everyday activity, the programme encouraged visitors to consider how sculpture, furniture, architecture and spatial arrangement could collectively change the atmosphere and meaning of a place.

Its central presentation, Alaya Kala, occupied the Melting Pot on ASHTA’s Ground Floor. The immersive installation paired sculptures by Indonesian artist Adi Gunawan with an interior setting designed to resemble a lived-in environment. Rather than treating the works as isolated objects, the exhibition placed them within a broader composition of furniture, architectural references and decorative elements.

The title drew from Sanskrit: Alaya, meaning a place of shelter, and Kala, meaning time. Together, the words suggested a space capable of holding memories, traces and personal histories. That idea was informed by Adi Gunawan’s artistic practice in Yogyakarta and his connection to Javanese cultural traditions. Elements associated with the Joglo house were interpreted through a contemporary design language, allowing familiar forms and cultural references to sit within a setting intended for present-day urban audiences.

Throughout the exhibition, visitors encountered a continuous exchange between heritage and modern living. Sculpture became part of the room rather than its sole focus, while the interior design helped frame each work through scale, placement and function. The result asked viewers to pay attention not only to individual objects, but also to the relationships formed between them.

The programme continued outside the exhibition area through Beyond the Walls, an installation presented along the Connecting Langham passage. Five contemporary sculptures were positioned at different points throughout the space, appearing amid the usual movement of visitors through the district.

These placements created small interruptions in an otherwise familiar route. People could stop, look and reflect without formally entering an exhibition, turning corridors and transitional areas into places of artistic encounter. CURATED LIVING was presented by ASHTA District 8 as part of its wider focus on art, design and community-led programming. Alaya Kala was developed by SANKHARA in collaboration with POLA Studio EST. 2016, Theory of Living and Quatro Design Studio, bringing together expertise across sculpture, interiors and spatial design.

The collaboration gave each discipline a distinct role while allowing them to operate as part of a single environment. It also demonstrated how cultural heritage can be interpreted through contemporary materials and settings without reducing it to decoration.
