News until morning
The U.S. Central Command announced on social media platform X that it launched a series of powerful airstrikes against Iran "to make them pay a heavy price for targeting a merchant vessel carrying innocent civilians in international waters."
It added, "The U.S. airstrikes were in response to Iran's attacks on three merchant vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz," and emphasized that "Iran's attack was a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement."
Two hours before the airstrikes, the United States also withdrew its sanctions waiver on Iranian oil. The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced the cancellation of a 60-day temporary general license issued on July 21.
Following the airstrikes, Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement warning that "the consequences of the United States' violation of provisions will be severely warned," and stated that it "will take decisive measures to protect its national interests and security."
