A, a grade 7 employee at the Yeongcheon City Administrative Welfare Center, has been under police investigation since last November on suspicion of embezzling 2.5 billion won from the local finance management system. A is accused of receiving approval from superiors for payments such as public utility bills and then transferring the money to his own account. This misconduct came to light when the recent budget balance of the Administrative Welfare Center was found to be insufficient. Police are investigating suspicions that A invested the embezzled money in virtual currency, and Yeongcheon City plans to investigate whether related personnel were properly supervised and managed, with disciplinary action to follow. Mayor Kim Byeong-sam held a press conference apologizing and promised to strictly discipline those involved based on the investigation results and recover the misappropriated public funds.
