The Philippine government is seeking to connect its power grid with Indonesia's as part of the ASEAN Power Grid initiative. This aims to enhance power supply stability, reduce electricity costs, and promote the use of renewable energy.
The project involves connecting Kalimantan-Sabah-Mindanao via a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine cable. The plan is to utilize hydropower from North Kalimantan and Sarawak. Both countries will prioritize a feasibility study covering power trading, regulations, technical standards, pricing mechanisms, and investment risks.
However, challenges such as seabed topography, earthquake and volcanic risks, HVDC equipment shortages, and the need for substantial investments are identified as key hurdles. The project timeline is estimated to be within 10 years.
