Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Koo Yun-cheol rebutted foreign media's negative assessment of the domestic stock market, saying "the Korean economy is sounder than ever and is showing unprecedented performance".
Deputy Prime Minister Koo said this on the 6th while presiding over an emergency economic headquarters meeting cum ministerial meeting on economic and structural innovation at the Government Complex Seoul. He stressed that "one foreign media report raises concerns about investing in the Korean stock market, but the real economy and macro indicators alike, including Korea's growth, exports, prices and consumer and business sentiment indices, continue to show a solid trend".
Shuli Ren, a columnist for the US news agency Bloomberg, had earlier on the 3rd (local time) pointed to the extreme volatility of the Korean stock market in a column titled 'South Korea is Becoming Uninvestable, Too'. In particular she singled out products such as the SK Hynix leveraged exchange-traded fund (ETF) as having magnified investment damage.
The government is aware of the problem too. Deputy Prime Minister Koo said, "the government is responding swiftly to ease stock market volatility, and recently the stock index has also been showing a stabilizing trend".
