I was working on a personal project with Codex late at night, and suddenly the question of what the future of developers will be like popped into my head, buzzing like a mosquito in my ear. I ended up writing down all sorts of things without any clear direction.
When we usually write code, we say something like "just weave the code," right? But thinking about where else that expression is used, it's also used when weaving cloth on a loom. Using a loom to interlace warp and weft threads to produce one output (=cloth), the shape (=performance) of the cloth varies greatly depending on how the person holding the loom (=developer) weaves the cloth within a limited time and with a certain amount of material. This was the era before Claude code/Codex.
With the advent of Claude code/Codex, a huge machine (=server) powered by electricity weaves cloth (=code) at an overwhelming speed, like a large loom. Just as most people who used to weave cloth on looms disappeared, will those who used to write code by hand gradually disappear in the future...? I had a somewhat crude imagination.
Of course, I don't think the future of developers is necessarily bleak. Rather, I hope that their roles will change significantly and they will have more opportunities to do even more. And although I expressed it with a loom, I still write and experiment with the code I need sometimes (even though AI might hate it?). ㅎㅎ
I don't think I'm the only one who is fixated on this topic, so I wrote this article to see what other people think.
