Recently, the shortage of SSD supply has been intensifying, and product warranty policies are emerging as a new factor of conflict between consumers and manufacturers.
Semiconductor Insider X cited the following example from SK Hynix.
- A user requested an exchange for a malfunctioning SK Hynix SSD, but was offered a refund due to lack of replacement stock.
- According to SK Hynix's warranty terms, the refund amount is calculated based on the lower of the purchase price at the time and the current market price.
- However, in the situation where SSD prices have soared, it is difficult to repurchase a product with the same performance if refunded at the original purchase price.
Meanwhile, Micron, a competitor, initially offered refunds based on the purchase price, but later revised its policy to exchange for a product of the same capacity after consumer backlash.
It remains to be seen how Hynix's policy will change in the future.
