The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) held a meeting to build an open AI computing infrastructure ecosystem.
The government will work with AMD to build an open AI (artificial intelligence) computing ecosystem. This will reduce reliance on the NVIDIA-centric GPU (graphics processing unit) ecosystem and aim to develop a market for domestic NPUs (neural processing units) and independent AI foundation models in partnership with AMD. AMD has agreed to establish Asia's first AI R&D (research and development) 'Center of Excellence (CoE)' in Korea by the end of the year.
The Ministry of Science and ICT held a meeting titled "Building an Open AI Computing Infrastructure Ecosystem" on the 20th at the HJ Business Center in Gwanghwamun, Seoul. On this day, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT, Baek Geun-hoon, and representatives from AMD Korea and domestic AI semiconductor and software industries finalized a cooperation plan with AMD. The core is the development and demonstration of an open heterogeneous AI architecture that connects domestic NPUs with AMD CPUs (central processing units) and GPUs.
