Nintendo Takes Harsh Action Against Switch Emulators with Over 400 GitHub Takedowns
Nintendo has taken fierce legal action against Switch emulators once again. We have previously reported on cases such as when Yuzu was targeted in March 2024, followed by the open-source Ryujinx being hit in October 2024.
After the two major emulators went down, development of open-source Nintendo Switch emulators continued, with 'Suyu' by far the largest in scale, containing a network of 311 repositories. At least until Nintendo sent GitHub its latest DMCA takedown notice, stating that emulation software circumvents the encryption that protects Nintendo Switch games from unauthorized copying and playback, enabling illegal piracy.

In addition to Suyu, six other repository networks recently received DMCA takedown notices. These include Android-based Skyline and Yuzu Android, which recorded 29 and 8 repositories respectively. NicolasArvani's Yuzu fork and its 14 repositories were also hit, as was IpwnedU's Yuzu fork which had no additional repositories. Finally, exverge-0's Yuzu-EA4176 and its 21 forks were subjected to DMCA action along with irlbunny-archive's C# based MonoNX and its 17 forks.
It's an enormous sweep by Nintendo, but those with a keen eye may notice that most of the emulators hit in this wave are based on Yuzu, which was already shut down two years ago.
Both Yuzu and Ryujinx were highly advanced in development when Nintendo came down on them, and before the original developers were forced to stop work, they had made virtually the entire Nintendo Switch library playable or nearly playable on PC. New forks of Suyu and similar programs will inevitably reappear, it's only a matter of time.
As TorrentFreak suggests, new Nintendo Switch emulator forks may reappear faster than Nintendo's takedown notices can eliminate them. In the case of Nintendo Switch emulation, the genie is already out of the bottle and Nintendo's legal team now appears to be dealing with a hydra. While individually none of these projects can beat Nintendo in court, they don't need to as long as the software survives, is distributed, and is forked again.
