Rep. Lee Jin-sook of People Power Party sparked controversy by hosting a forum on the reexamination of the May 18 Democratization Movement with right-wing groups at the National Assembly. In response, the opposition bloc introduced and passed a resolution calling for her expulsion from the party. The resolution stated that Rep. Lee had tarnished the dignity of a lawmaker and undermined the honor and authority of the National Assembly. Rep. Lee abstained from voting and argued that her remarks were an exercise of freedom of expression and a discussion on the issue of contributors to the democratization movement. This resolution is the first case in constitutional history, but a separate disciplinary measure is required for actual expulsion.
