The number of births in May this year was 23,160, a 13.6% increase compared to the same month last year, and it has been increasing for 23 consecutive months since July 2024. There is a possibility that the total fertility rate will return to around 0.9 this year due to this trend. However, the low birth rate problem has caused serious aging, and recent increases in births alone are not enough to solve it. Over the past 10 years, the youth population has decreased by 24.9%, while the elderly population has increased by 62.0%, forming an 'inverted pyramid' population structure. The OECD emphasized the need for structural reforms to address the low birth rate and aging problems in its report on the Korean economy.
