Students in China are now using AI-powered chatbots to help them choose universities and majors after the national college entrance exam (gaokao). Gaokao is a highly competitive exam in China, with results determining admission to dream universities. Because of the unique selection process where students choose campuses after the exam, many are turning to free AI chatbots from tech companies like Alibaba, ByteDance, Baidu, and Tencent for recommendations. These chatbots have answered millions of questions related to freshman admissions, demonstrating the popularity of these services among Chinese students. One example is Guo Xinyan, an 18-year-old student who used an AI chatbot to determine her future after gaokao.
