Anthropic, the developer of the AI chatbot Claude, is being sued by Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell Music for alleged copyright infringement of tens of thousands of songs. The lawsuit claims that Anthropic used popular music works such as songs by Taylor Swift, Mariah Carey, and Mark Ronson without permission to train the Claude AI model. The two music publishing companies are seeking damages of up to $150,000 per song found to be infringed, which could potentially reach billions of dollars if their claims are upheld. In addition to Anthropic as a company, its two founders, Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann, are also being sued individually. The lawsuit was filed on Friday (8/28/2026) in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
