Prof. Mohammad Nuh, Secretary of the Steering Committee for the 35th NU Congress, revealed the background of the changes to the mechanism for electing the General Chair of the PBNU. The change from a one man one vote system to Ahlul Halli wal Aqdi (AHWA) was made to address differences of opinion within the organization and to reunite diverse viewpoints. Prof. Nuh emphasized the importance of the Congress over the interests of the candidates, as well as the need for the committee to be firm and impartial. The AHWA system was chosen because it is considered more appropriate for the increasingly complex leadership challenges facing NU and requires a collective approach. Through this system, nine senior clerics who are competent and have the capacity will elect the Rais Aam and General Chair of the PBNU.
