U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met consecutively with Bank of Japan Governor Ueda Kazuo and Japanese Finance Minister Katayama Satsuki, emphasizing Japan's fiscal sustainability and clarifying interest rate increases, NHK reported on the 1st.

Erin Brown, Deputy Treasury Secretary for International Affairs at the U.S. Department of Treasury, told NHK in an interview that Secretary Bessent met with Bank of Japan Governor Ueda on the 30th of last month and Finance Minister Katayama on the 31st respectively.

They are currently attending the Group of Twenty (G20) Finance Ministers Meeting held in Asheville, North Carolina.

Secretary Bessent reportedly told both Governor Ueda and Finance Minister Katayama, "As a next step, it is important to clearly present to the market the path toward fiscal sustainability and interest rate increases."

The next step he mentioned appears to be measures following the currency intervention in late July when the U.S. and Japanese governments jointly conducted large-scale purchases of the yen.

========================

Bessent is busy. With elections coming up soon, it would be dangerous if Japan explodes.
